Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority (MKAA) | Southwest Day
Client Overview
The Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority (MKAA) operates McGhee Tyson Airport, a vital transportation hub serving East Tennessee. As a key driver of regional connectivity and economic development, MKAA plays an important role in linking the community to national destinations while supporting long-term growth across the region. With continued expansion and increased airline partnerships, the airport serves as a gateway for both business and leisure travel throughout East Tennessee.
The Challenge
The arrival of Southwest Airlines to Knoxville marked a major milestone for both the airport and the surrounding community. This moment represented more than just a new airline—it signaled increased accessibility, economic momentum, and regional growth.
MKAA needed a way to capture the scale and significance of this event and communicate it effectively to a broad audience. Traditional event coverage alone would not be enough. The challenge was to create high-quality, real-time content that could extend the reach of the event beyond those in attendance while maintaining a polished, professional presentation. Additionally, MKAA wanted to ensure that the impact of this milestone continued beyond a single day through strategic content distribution.
Our Strategy & Services
To support this initiative, ZC Productions developed a real-time content strategy focused on speed, storytelling, and multi-platform distribution. Rather than treating the event as a one-time production, we approached it as a content engine designed to generate both immediate engagement and long-term value.
Our services included full-scale video production, photography coverage, interview production, and a structured post-event rollout strategy. By combining cinematic visuals with strategic messaging, we ensured that the content not only documented the event but also reinforced its importance to the region.
What We Did (Execution)
Our team deployed a multi-crew production approach to capture every key moment of the day. With full tarmac access and close coordination with airport operations and security teams, we were able to film from exclusive vantage points both on the runway and within event spaces.
We captured a wide range of content, including gate celebrations, attendee interactions, and interviews with travelers. The arrival of the inaugural Southwest flight and its water cannon salute were filmed from multiple perspectives, including behind-the-scenes angles that provided a unique and immersive viewing experience.
In addition, we filmed the official press conference and remarks from key leaders, including Bill Lee, Randy McNally, Randy Boyd, Cameron Sexton, Indya Kincannon, and Glenn Jacobs, along with additional state and federal representatives.
Throughout the event, our team captured cinematic B-roll, conducted interviews, and coordinated across multiple locations to ensure complete coverage. A dedicated photographer simultaneously documented the event with high-quality still imagery.
Most notably, we edited and delivered a full recap video the same day as the event. This allowed MKAA to immediately share the experience across social media while the excitement was still at its peak. Additional content—including testimonial videos, leadership highlights, and behind-the-scenes features—was released in the following days to sustain engagement and extend the life of the event.
The Results
As a result of this strategic and real-time content approach, MKAA generated over 80,000 views and more than 2,000 engagements across social platforms through organic distribution alone.
More importantly, the content successfully communicated the scale, energy, and significance of the milestone in a way that traditional messaging could not. By combining immediate delivery with a phased rollout strategy, MKAA was able to maximize awareness, reinforce regional pride, and highlight the continued growth of McGhee Tyson Airport and East Tennessee.
The final assets also created a long-term content library that MKAA can continue to use for marketing, public relations, and community engagement.
Why It Worked
This project was successful because it combined real-time execution with strategic planning. By integrating content creation into the event itself, we were able to capture authentic moments while delivering polished assets at speed.
The combination of high-level access, cinematic storytelling, and structured content rollout ensured that the event’s impact extended far beyond a single day. Every piece of content served a purpose—whether it was driving immediate engagement or supporting long-term brand positioning.
